Through Magda, the film reflects a segment of Hungarys history. The Stalin-era autobiographical film "Diary for My Children" uses newsreel footage and montages from the 1950s to depict the complex personal and political scenes of that era. Despite being banned from release in the West for two years, it still won the Special Jury Prize at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival.
In 1947, a group of Hungarian underground party members returned to Budapest by plane from the Soviet Union, and among them was the teenage girl Yuli. Her father, a famous sculptor, was arrested during the Soviet purges of the 1930s and disappeared. Her mother, a painter who spoke multiple languages, often took Yuli to watch movies, but she died when Yuli was very young. Yuli returned to Hungary with her grandparents and lived with her aunt, Magda. Magda was a former underground party member and became the chief editor of a newspaper after the war, enjoying a luxurious and comfortable apartment. Yuli attended a school for privileged children, where her aunt wanted to adopt her. However, Yuli disagreed as she did not like Magda. She skipped school to watch movies, longing for her past life and her parents. Yuli admired Magdas old comrade János, a veteran Bolshevik and chief engineer of a major factory. Jánoss wife and daughter were killed in an air raid, and his son became disabled. He cared deeply for Yuli as well. Magda later became a prison director and actively participated in the Great Purge campaign starting in 1949. János suddenly disappeared. Yuli decided to leave Magda and work as a factory worker. In 1953, she visited János in prison, signifying that she and his son would wait for his return to freedom together.
