The differences between the Austrian version and the more commonly available American version of this film are immediately apparent in both their length and the language used in the intertitles. The American version is shorter at 1,883 meters, which translates to about 7 minutes less than the Austrian version, which runs at 2,045 meters. Initially, it was assumed that the discrepancy was due to the varying length of the intertitles, but a direct comparison revealed that the Austrian version diverges from the American one not only in the editing but also in the duration of individual scenes. It is intriguing to consider how a later regional release of a quintessential US silent film ended up being longer than the original version. The widely recognized American version of "Blind Husbands" does not align with the version screened at its 1919 premiere. This lesser-known fact was brought to light by Richard Koszarski in 1983. Universal Pictures reissued the film in 1924 in a truncated form that was 416 meters shorter than the original version. This disparity equates to a difference of approximately 20 minutes at 18 frames per second. Changes were made to intertitles, snippets of action were excised, and a notable scene featuring von Steuben and Margaret visiting a local chapel was entirely removed. As per Koszarski, all existing American copies of the film stem from this abridged re-release version, a copy of which was contributed by Universal to the Museum of Modern Art in 1941. The original negative of the film was reportedly destroyed between 1956 and 1961, rendering it lost forever. These findings shed light on the Austrian version, which can be dated to the period between the summer of 1921 and the winter of 1922. Moreover, this version runs approximately 200 meters longer than the 1924 US release, placing it midway between the premiere edition and the revised version. A substantial portion of the additional footage in the Austrian version can be attributed to scenes that were cut in the 1924 rendition almost across the board. Koszarski documented how the start and finish of scenes were trimmed to increase the films pace. More intriguingly, it was discovered that the Austrian version contains shots absent from the American edition: shot-countershots, intertitles, and variations in montage. These disparities suggest that "Die Rache der Berge" represents the most ancient and comprehensively preserved iteration of the film.
