Shaw and Richard Blake, a Harvard-educated engineer, both vie for Sues affections. However, their rivalry is put on hold as construction of the telegraph line begins. During the construction, a man is killed by individuals disguised as Indians, revealed to be part of a gang working for the Confederacy. Shaw, aware of their true identities, tries to protect his former associates by diverting suspicion to Dakota Indians. As tensions escalate, a series of conflicts ensue, leading to betrayal, deception, and confrontations with hostile Indians. Amidst the chaos, Shaw confronts his brother, a key member of the gang sabotaging the telegraph project. In a final showdown, Shaw sacrifices himself to stop the gang and ensure the completion of the Western Union line. Despite the loss, the project is successful, and Shaw is remembered as a hero by Creighton and his associates.
