As Steinmetz advances in his abilities, he transitions from creating inanimate objects to living beings, with the ultimate goal of creating a human being. In order to achieve this, Steinmetz urges Dr. Holst to perform a certain brain operation on him which he claims will help him accomplish his ambition. Unnerved by Steinmetzs radical proposal, Dr. Holst declines to partake in the risky surgery. In retaliation, Steinmetz begins manipulating Dr. Holsts life in an attempt to coerce him into compliance. With his newfound ability to create temporary human beings, Steinmetz conjures a doppelganger of Dr. Holst to carry out the operation. As the doppelganger wreaks havoc in Dr. Holsts personal and professional life, he decides to take a stand against Steinmetzs malevolent plans. The ensuing conflict between Dr. Holst and his imposter culminates in an unexpected and satisfying conclusion that leaves the characters and readers alike in awe.
